(With apologies to Keith Olberman) The award goes to Kurt Cass, a 16-year old fat bastard who beat up his grandmother with a two-by-four because she initially refused to give him $100 to buy beer: Investigators say Cass went into his 60-year-old grandmother’s bedroom Thursday and asked her for $100 for beer. When she refused, he allegedly placed a razor … Read More
Just So We’re All On The Same Page
We think we’ll make this into a series. (1) It’s a "dog eat dog" world, not a "doggie dog" world, moron. (2) For Scrabble players: "Qa" is a word. (It’s a Babylonian liquid measurement). (3) The models for Grant Wood’s American Gothic were Grant Wood’s dentist, and his sister. The dentist is on the one on the left. (4) "Momentarily" … Read More
50 Most Loathsome People In America
I may quibble about the order, but this list seems pretty good to me: The 50 Most Loathsome People in America, 2005. No. 33 is Johnny Damon: Charges: Any baseball player with highlights in his hair should be faced with the same penalty system applied to those using performance-enhancing steroids. It’s ruining the game. And if a ball player is … Read More
If The Government Does It, Why Shouldn’t You?
Bored on the Internet? (You must be — you’re reading this blog). Since peering in on other people’s private lives and conversations is so in vogue these days, maybe you should embrace it and check out these cyberplaces: (1) PostSecret: A blog of sorts where anybody can mail in a postcard and share (anonymously, of course) their dark secrets and … Read More
The First Blogger
Daniel Rubin at the Philly Inquirer makes the convincing case that Ben Franklin, who celebrated his 300th birthday yesterday, was the first blogger: Not so far a stretch, really. He pamphleteered, self-published, delivered colonial dish, news and opinion, sampled other’s work and remixed it into his own mash. He wrote anonymously, or under pseudonyms. Instead of posting daily, he squirreled … Read More
Volcano Activity
I’ve added a couple "live" webcams (actually, 0ne is updated every half hour) to my slideshow at the right. They show the current view of the Augustine (Alaska) volcano, which is set to blow any day/week now. Maybe. The cam from Homer, Alaska is from a vantage point 75 miles away, so it may not look like much, especially on … Read More
I, For One, Welcome Our Green Glowing Pig Overlords
Some very smart men apparently have too much time on their hands: Scientists in Taiwan say they have bred three pigs that glow in the dark. They claim that while other researchers have bred partly fluorescent pigs, theirs are the only pigs in the world which are green through and through. The pigs are transgenic, created by adding genetic material … Read More
News Items We Have A Hard Time Swallowing
Chinese man is unable to be photographed: On January 6, 2006, Henan Province’s Dahe Daily newspaper reported that the local police department was unable to take an ID photo of Ye Xiangting from Yelou Village in the Yangzhuang Township of Wugang City, Henan Province. No image of Ye Xiangting showed up in the computer photos, and there is still no … Read More
Nice Work If You Can Get It
A nineteen-year old kid is planning to spend $100,000 (his own money from his businesses) to live at Disneyworld for one year, and liveblogging his experiences.
“No Shit, Sherlock” Headline Of The Day
Actual headline: One-Eyed Cat Had Medical Condition Gee, you think?
Fighting Script With Script
Telemarketers, as many know, work off a script. It’s really a script flow chart so that they have a scripted response to whatever you say. Some clever person has devised a "counterscript" to be used by the consumer recipient of the telemarketers’ calls. The script turns the conversation around, where you try to elicit information from the telemarketer. Good idea.
Question Of The Day
From UK’s The Sun, the lede paragraphs: DOPY Gary Telford showed drunken pals how he caught his manhood in a mouse trap — and did it again. Pub manager Gary, 32, was in agony after the party piece went wrong. Amazingly it was the SECOND time he has been taken to casualty after getting his privates mangled in the stunt. … Read More
Unclaimed Territory
Glenn Greenwald has been blogging for only a few months now, and it’s one of the great blogs out there. A First Amendment lawyer by trade, he’s been getting noteriety for his posts relating to the NSA wiretapping issue, and deservedly so. I’m adding him to my blogroll, and I thought I would mention his blog — Unclaimed Territory — … Read More
