At least 12 people were shot and killed, and 50 injured in a shooting at an Aurora, Colorado movie theater showing The Dark Knight Rises this morning around 1 AM. Witnesses have varying accounts of a man in black and/or body armor releasing tear gas and opening fire in what sounds like more than one theater in a multiplex.
A 24 year-old male suspect, James Holmes, is in custody.
Too soon to speculate on motive, but we do know the shooter was white, and early indication was that he was acting alone.
A circulating cell-phone video apparently taken outside the theater. A man spattered with blood walks out of the theater at 00:52.
A San Diego woman who identified herself as James Holmes' mother told ABC News she had awoken unaware of the shooting and had not yet been contacted by authorities. She immediately expressed concern that her son may have been involved.
"You have the right person," she said, apparently speaking on gut instinct. "I need to call the police… I need to fly out to Colorado."
Seems he might have had a history of problems or violent tendencies if his mom wasn't surprised.
