Just because people moved past the "Rush/Fluke" kerfuffle doesn't mean that it ended. To date, 140 advertisers have pulled their ads from Limbaugh's show. Many of them came to light after a memo was published from Premiere Radio Networks. Read the details.
Dispatches From The War On Women
State legislatures are busy debating another round of anti-choice legislation (after passing a record number of anti-abortion measures in 2011). But this year, women are speaking up more loudly. To push back against the Republican-backed proposals, Democrats have proposed satirical bills mocking extreme measures bestowing personhood on a zygote and requiring women to have ultrasounds before abortion procedures. And constituents have voiced their … Read More
Utah Goes Back To The Victorian Era
Utah's legislature gave final passage this week with a Senate vote of 19-10 to an abstinence-only sex-ed bill that forbids discussion of homosexuality even if the student asks, FOX13 reports: After the new bill goes into effect, the teaching of sex education in Utah classrooms has to be about not having sex before marriage and fidelity within marriage. Teachers cannot advocate … Read More
Even Rush Boycotts Rush!
The attorney for Rush, the group, writes a letter to Rush Limbaugh, the woman-hater. Here (pdf).
43 Boycott Rush
Rush isn't talking about Fluke or his lame "apology" on his radio show anymore, and the flames seem to have died down, but the toll continues to grow. According to Think Progress' running count, 34 43 companies have now yanked or foresworn ads on the show. No one seems to know how many sponsors Rush has left (LifeLock and Lear Capital have … Read More
And Netflix Makes Thirty
Moments ago, Netflix emailed a statement to the tech website Boing Boing indicating that the company will ensure that its ads never appear on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show again: Spotted your tweets and wanted to let you know that Netflix has not purchased and does not purchase advertising on the Rush Limbaugh show. We do buy network radio advertising and have confirmed … Read More
Full Circle
Wow. Saint Vincent's Hospital in Connecticut, a Catholic medical center, is withdrawing its advertising from Rush Limbaugh, according to the hospital's Twitter feed. Remember, this all started because Catholic insitutions were upset and having to "pay for" contraception coverage. Apparently, Rush stunk up his side so badly that even his allies are distancing themselves.
How To Apologize
What is this? Like, the tenth Limbaugh post in a row? No, not really. This one is a little different. It's a public service message on how to apologize. Or actually, how NOT to apologize, using Limbaugh's apology as an instructional template. (Yeah, this is a Limbaugh post. Who am I kidding?) So let's look at the text of the … Read More
The Limbaugh Tally
So, it looks like 12 advertisers have pulled their ads. [UPDATE: It's twenty, actually, according to Think Progress; UPDATE @ 12:30pm: Twenty-four.] Plus two radio stations. And if you saw the clip of Limbaugh's explanation of his (non)apology, you may have noticed that Limbaugh uses Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" as intro music. Even THAT has been pulled (at Gabriel's insistance). Incidentally, one … Read More
The Rush Limbaugh-Fluke Lies
Catalogues nicely by John Cole: 1.) Lie #1- She was testifying about her sex life: This is a blatant lie. As we have noted repeatedly, nowhere in her testimony did Miss Fluke discuss her sex life, sexual preferences, or sexual activity. She discusses the need for contraceptives for a variety of reasons, most prominently discussing her friend’s disease, but never once does she discuss … Read More
Limbaugh’s Non-Apology
Posted on his website Saturday: "For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke. I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political … Read More
The Right’s Sex Obsession Explained
Shorter Aaron Worthing: Rush Limbaugh was wrong to call Sandra Fluke a slut. As for me, I would prefer not to inquire into whether women in college are sluts or not, but Obamacare is forcing me to ask.
Good News Short Takes
(1) The Blunt amendment, which would have allowed employers to opt out of a new federal health-care mandate for their employees if they have religious or moral objections, failed to win the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster. The vote was 51 to 48. It's a shame that it was so close, but a victory is a victory. And … Read More
Dear Senator Baumgartner
Sen. Michael BaumgartnerWashington State SenateCandidate for US Senate Dear Sen. Baumgartner, It's so nice to know there is at least one politician out there who speaks the truth. So many times, it just seems like our elected officials have no clue about things. Thankfully, you are not one of them. I am speaking, of course, about the other day when … Read More
Rick Santorum Wants My Sex Life To Be “Special”
That's thoughtful of him. You can watch the whole 45 minute video, or just read the excerpt below, but here's what Rick Santorum said in an interview a few months ago with caffinatedthoughts.com: One of the things I will talk about that no president has talked about before is I think the dangers of contraception in this country, the whole … Read More
